At this time of year, it is interesting to look at the feedback that members and visiting hikers share with the society. Most of the trailheads have information boxes for distributing maps and pamphlets. The entries recorded on the provided comment sheets are always welcome and suggestions are invariably constructive. Most users remark on the natural beauty of the area as well as expressing an appreciation of the work done by the trail crews. Comments such as “awesome” and “keep up the good work” are typical.
All of the society's trails had increased use in 2007. Overall, the Kootenay River Trails saw more than a 60% increase in visits, with the Brilliant Overlook Trail recording an increase of 80% over 2006 figures. The Skattebo Reach Trail and the associated Doukhobor Waterline Trail continue to be the choice for most walkers, followed by the springtime favourite Dove Hill Trail. Frequent high river levels over the summer affected Waldie Island Trail, but it remains a popular outing.
West Kootenay residents make up the majority of users (over 85%) on the Kootenay River Trails. In 2007, outdoor enthusiasts from other parts of Canada and the U.S. enjoyed our trail system, as well as visitors from Australia, Brazil, France, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden and Yugoslavia.
Despite the persistent snow cover this winter, a number of hardy walkers are using the lower elevation trails. Waldie Island Trail is handy for many residents to escape the indoors and enjoy their birding and outdoor pursuits. The trails at the Selkirk College campus are usually boot-packed and some sections are even plowed. The access road to Dove Hill from the Golf Club gate is commonly used by snowshoers and even the odd runner has been observed on the Yellow Pine Trail at Syringa Provincial Park. It is anticipated that the coming hiking season will offer many opportunities for all those fortunate enough to enjoy our beautiful environment.
