News from the Columbia River
by Fiona Mackay
There are a number of events coming up soon.
On September 24, BC Rivers Day at Gyro in Trail will have the White Sturgeon Recovery
Initiative booth along side Teck Cominco's tables. Displays will be up from 10 am
to 4 pm and well worth the visit.
From October 19 to 22, the Environmental Culture Conference will be held in Castlegar.
For more information, check the website: http://www.basinculture.com/.
This conference will be diverse and very interesting.
Thank you to all those who turned up for the May 3, Juvenile White Sturgeon release
that took place downstream of the Hugh Keenlyside dam. The event was extremely
successful.
Moving from the river to the mountains and replacing my
W5RI** ball cap with my ski toque:
There has been some discussion about the installation of a fixed roof lodge in the Nancy
Greene area. Deadlines for applications for proposals to the Ministry of Environment is
at the end of August. Applications are being accepted from both commercial
organizations and non-profit groups.
For us users of this area for backcountry skiing and snowshoeing, it is very important
that we continue to track the progress of these proposals and its potential impact on
public access in our park.
Public input will be sought following the receipt of the proposals. For more
information, please check out the website.
